Grilled Pizza Recipe

Grilled Pizza is one recipe you will want to cook for your family! Not only is it quick and easy – it’s a great way to get the whole family involved.

With this grilled pizza recipe, kids can make their own pizza or you can all assemble them as a family.

You can use the grilled pizza recipe below and substitute your favorite meat and other toppings however you like. You can use pepperoni, olives and mushrooms. Or you could use ham and pineapples… whatever you like is what you should top your pizza with.

The key to grilled pizza is to limit your toppings to 2-3. We suggest using 1 protein and 1-2 veggies. When you keep the pizza toppings simple, your pizza will grill more evenly and it will stay on the pizza instead of falling in your lap!

Here are the ingredients you will need to make your Grilled Pizza:

  • 1 Thin Pizza Dough
  • 2 – 3 toppings of your choice
  • ½ cup Pizza Sauce *recipe to follow
  • 8oz Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Pizza can be cooked on just about any grill as long as you can control the heat. For this recipe the grill needs to be 350 to 400 degrees or on a medium setting.

You can make your own crust if you like, but the store-bought thin crusts are really good on the grill plus it’s quick & easy. They typically come in a 2-pack, so you have enough pizza to feed the entire family!

You can also purchase a Pizza Sauce at the store, but it’s pretty easy to make your own. All you need for your own Grilled Pizza sauce is:

  • 28oz can of Crushed Tomatoes
  • 4-5 cloves of Fresh Garlic chopped
  • ¼ cup Red Onion chopped
  • 2 TBS Olive Oil
  • 3-4 Fresh Basil Leaves chopped
  • ¼ cup Red Wine
  • ½ cup Water
  • Salt and Cracked Black Pepper to taste
  • Pinch of Sugar

Heat the Olive Oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Sautee the garlic and red onion for 2-3 minutes. Add the crushed tomatoes, basil, and red wine. Bring to slight boil and season with salt, black pepper, and pinch of sugar. Reduce the heat to low and add the water. Simmer for 30 minutes. The sauce can be made in advance and held in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

Once you have the grill fired up, it’s time to assemble the pizza. Place the crust on a round pizza screen and ladle on the sauce. Use the back of a large spoon to evenly spread the sauce almost to the edge of the crust; then sprinkle a border of the mozzarella cheese around the edge.

Next you add your toppings and top the pizza with more mozzarella and it’s ready to grill.

Carefully slide the pizza off the screen directly onto the grill. Since the crust is precooked this is simple. Close the lid and set a timer for 10 minutes.

The pizza will cook pretty fast, so you’ll want to keep an eye on it. I check the bottom of the crust halfway just to make sure it’s not burning. Also if one side seems to be cooking faster on top give it a rotate.

Once the edges have browned and the cheese is completely melted the pizza is done. Slide the pizza screen underneath and take it inside to your cutting board.

When you take the time to grill your own pizza, you get a smoky flavor in the crispy crust! It’s a big hit and your family will love it!
